Small‐Magnitude Seismic Swarms in Central Utah (US): Interactions of Regional Tectonics, Local Structures and Hydrothermal Systems

Swarms in Central Utah are situated the complex transition between Basin and Range (BR) province Colorado Plateau. Transecting transverse structures, volcanic deposits, hydrothermal systems complicate extensional BR horst graben structures provide a multitude of plausible triggering mechanisms. Revisiting catalog University Seismograph Stations (1981–2022), we analyze spatio-temporal patterns characteristic features seismic sequences. with alternating seismicity rates, bursts, longer swarms persistent moment release exhibit remarkable diversity temporal evolution. Swarm durations do not scale cumulative moment: lasting less than 1 day can have similar moments as month-long swarms. We observe stationary re-occurring for years (e.g., Mineral Mountains), well singular low-seismicity areas activating local structure Milford, 2021). The show pronounced heterogeneity driving mechanisms, observed detailed analysis exemplary sequences (detections, relocations, tensors, waveform-based clustering, repeater analysis). 2022 Sevier Valley sequence activated BR-related normal fault, first resolved fault plane valley since 1983. 2011 Circleville is interpreted swarm triggered by mainshock-aftershock activity characterized increasing magnitudes, changing rupture concentration highly events second part sequence.
